Synopsis:Wild-Heat

Sometimes old flames are the hottest of all . . .

In the quaint little town of Cailkirn, Alaska, it’s impossible to keep a secret, especially one as juicy as the unexpected return of Kitty Grant. Tack MacKinnon remembers her wild red curls and even wilder spirit—and still feels the sting from when she shattered his heart in college. But there’s a pain in Kitty’s gorgeous eyes that guts him to the core, and Tack is determined to do whatever it takes to see the woman he still loves smile again—even if it means taking on her demons as his own.

After fleeing an abusive ex-husband, Kitty decides that the best way to heal her broken heart is to come back home. But she gets a whole new shock when she sees how undeniably sexy Tack has become. More handsome, more muscular, more charming—more everything—he’s impossible to resist. Before she knows it, they’re reigniting sparks that could set the whole state of Alaska on fire. Yet trust doesn’t come easy to Kitty anymore, and as things heat up between her and Tack, she can’t help but wonder if one of them is going to get burned.

Review:

Kitty Grant returns to Cailkern, Alaska, to heal from her divorce from an abusive husband.  Even though she could not wait to get away when she was younger, now all she wants is to return home to a place she will feel safe.  Her failed marriage has had a negative effect on her life and she does not know if she will ever recover.  But she feels that if anywhere can help her become whole again, it is her hometown.

Tack MacKinnon has also returned home, but his return was years ago.  Kitty and Tack were best friends many years ago, and he followed her when she went to college.  But when Kitty left him to pursue another man, Tack returned home, dejected and broken hearted.  When he sees Kitty again, he finds that his feelings toward her have not died, they still burn bright.  When he sees how damaged she is, his heart breaks once again.  He knows that he must stand by her and help her in her healing process.  And hopefully, somewhere along the way, she will return the feelings he has for her.

This book is a love story but it is so much more.  It is a story of second chances and starting over again, of learning to love yourself and letting go of the past.  I always enjoy stories like this, and this is a good one.

I applaud the author for writing about very serious issues that face our society today.  Abuse, eating disorders and low self-esteem are not topics that many authors would address.  But this author did just that, and she address them tactfully and compassionately.  She showed how serious they are and how difficult it is to overcome any one of them.

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  While reading the book, many times I could feel Kitty’s despair and despondency.  It all seemed so real to me and made my heart break for her.  I could tell how much Tack cared about Kitty and it was refreshing to see how far he was willing to go to help her work through all her issues.  Along their journey everything was not hearts and flowers and they had many struggle to face, which they did together.  I enjoyed the small town feel and the fact that everyone knew everybody else’s business.  It gave the book a cozy feel but with a lot more steam.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.   The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and this brought the book to life for me.  Many times I felt like I was right there, listening to the conversations going on around me and watching the action take place.  I really appreciate it when an author is able to do that.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written contemporary women’s read.  I would not recommend letting a young adult read this due to the steaminess.  I am happy to see that this is the first book in the series and I am looking forward to book two.
